This fall, through an artists residency (August 6-13, 2017), collective exhibition, and event week (September 16-27, 2017) at the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory, HAYP Pop Up Gallery is bringing together artists and scientists to imagine communicating with extraterrestrial intelligence. HAYP 10.0: CETI Lab was inspired by the CETI conference that took place in Byurakan in 1971.

Dates & Hours of Operation:

The exhibition will be open daily to the public from Saturday, September 16, 2017 until Wednesday, September 27, 2017.

Location 1: The Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory, Byurakan, Armenia.
Hours of Operation: Open daily Monday-Friday from 16:00 to 20:00. Open weekends from 12:00 to 20:00.
Location 2: The Herouni Radio-Optic Telescope, Orgov, Armenia.
Hours of Operation: Open daily Monday-Friday from 16:00 to 19:00. Open weekends from 12:00 to 19:00.

A ticket is required to enter the exhibition grounds at BAO and at the Herouni Telescope. The ticket is available for free on Eventbrite. Register here!

The Locations

Main Venue: The Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory, Byurakan, Armenia

The Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory was founded by renowned scientist Victor Ambartsumian in 1946. Construction started that year, and the central building structure, the hotel and the astronomical towers were all finalized in 1955.

From its inception, the Byurakan Astrophyical Observatory was associated with studies on instability in the universe: the first two conferences that were held there focused on Stellar Associations (in 1951), and Non-Stable Stars (in 1956).

In 1971, the first international conference on Extra-terrestrial intelligence and communication with them was held, hosting many prominent scientists from around the world (read more about this here).

Today the observatory’s instruments include: 5-inch double astrograph, 8/12-inch Schmidt telescope, 10-inch telescope-spectrograph, nebular spectrograph, 16-inch Cassegrain telescope, 21-inch Schmidt telescope, and 40-inch Schmidt telescope (one of the largest in the world).

Secondary Venue: The Herouni Radio-Optic Telescope, Orgov (Armenia)

A short distance away from the observatory grounds also lies the Herouni Mirror Radio telescope, an impressive 54m-diameter antenna. It was built in 1975-1985 under the direction of famous radio-physicist, engineer and astronomer Paris Herouni, also known for his amateur research on Karahunj.
